The W.J. Mouat junior varsity Hawks rolled through their first playoff game last week, defeating the Handsworth Royals of North Vancouver 55-26.
Despite an opening drive touchdown by the Royals, the Hawks responded in a big way and led by a score of 24-6 after the first quarter. However, a highly skilled Royals team did not back down, battling back to make it a 32-20 game at half-time. The Hawks came out after the half and re-established their dominance, scoring the next three touchdowns of the game to put it out of reach. The Hawks relied on a steady ground attack behind the strong play of their offensive line, with three running backs rushing for over 100 yards: Nelson Lokombo (17 rushes for 227 yards), Austin Lal (13 rushes for 173 yards), and Edward Escobal (6 rushes for 119 yards). The Hawks now move into the semifinals of the AAA playoffs, journeying to Vancouver College this Thursday.
