In Loving Memory of Desmond Bassi

In Loving Memory of
Desmond Roy Rajan Bassi
November 12, 1993 ~ July 23, 2011

Desmond Roy Rajan Bassi was born on November 12, 1993, in Abbotsford, BC, to Robert and Diljit. He grew up with his older brother Ryan and recently gained a step-brother Gavin and half-sister Ella.

Desmond was a natural born athlete and excelled at hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball and football. When he was five-years-old, Desmond started playing soccer and hockey, and never complained about the early morning practices and games as he was very passionate about sports. His love for football began at age 11, when Desmond started playing flag football, which was coached by his dad. He also played basketball until he graduated from W. J. Mouat High School.

Desmond achieved many accolades for his sports performances. More notably, he was on the Junior BC Championship Football Team in 2008. Subsequent to his junior year in high school, Desmond was one of the few players selected to be part of the BC provincial team where they traveled to Nova Scotia and finished third overall. In his senior year, Desmond received the Outstanding Receiver Award for W.J. Mouat Varsity Football team and he was also awarded the AAA Division BC High School Football All-Star Team Receiver. As well in his senior year, the basketball team won the Fraser Valley Championships and finished fourth in the province.

Aside from his athletic abilities, Desmond was an exceptional son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, friend, and overall person who was very close to everyone he knew, especially his family. He was very polite, humble, and soft-spoken. Desmond was a role model to his younger family members and always set aside time to spend with them despite his busy sports and training schedules. He was the most genuine, loving, caring, and patient person.

He led by example and had a very attractive personality and demeanor that caught every- one’s attention. He was tall, handsome and stood out from the crowd. In fact, in his yearbook he was voted Canada’s Next Top Model.

He had a lot of respect for his elders and received respect and praise in return. Although he was only with us for 17 years, he taught us to be better people. He had a lot to offer and such a bright future ahead of him. In his senior year, Desmond worked extremely hard with his mom to improve his grades and as a result, was accepted at Simon Fraser University on a football scholarship, which he was going to attend this fall.

He was a very positive and determined young man who lived life to the fullest and accomplished so much in a short time span. He loved to travel and vacationed with friends and family in Mexico, Las Vegas, California, India, Hawaii and Florida. He’ll be remembered for his bashful smile, which made everyone smile in return. His warmth touched everyone’s lives and hearts and he’ll be remembered forever. Thank you Desmond for bringing so much joy to all of our lives!

Desmond’s wish was to find a cure for cancer after his grandfather passed away from prostate cancer. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society Abbotsford branch, #128 – 31935 South Fraser Way, Tel: 604-852-1410, or online at

As I Lay Me Down to Sleep Prayer
As You Lay Me Down to Sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.
