Abbotsford athletes led the defensive charge as Team B.C. opened the Football Canada Cup with a shutout victory over Manitoba on Saturday in Lethbridge, Alta.

B.C. took a slim 1-0 lead into halftime, but the offence came to life in the second half, posting 17 points to put the finishing touches on an 18-0 win.

W.J. Mouat linebacker Jake Heathcote was named B.C.’s defensive player of the game, while his Hawks teammate Nathan Henczel had an interception late in the fourth quarter.

B.C. moves on to face Quebec in the semifinals on Tuesday.
