Heading into last Friday’s non-conference match-up with the Bonita Vista Barons of San Diego, high school football observers were well aware of the W.J. Mouat Hawks’ big-play offence.

Turns out, their defence is equally explosive.

The D set the tone in Mouat’s 35-14 demolition of their American guests, as Daniel Markin and Tanner Hamade returned interceptions for touchdowns to spot the Hawks an early 14-0 lead. Markin’s return was a 20-yarder, while Hamade took his pick 70 yards to the house.

“We’ve got pretty good team speed, so when we do get a turnover, we have a chance to bring it all the way back,” Hawks coach Denis Kelly observed.

The Hawks’ offence also had a good day under the direction of QB Cam Bedore, who completed 19 of 30 passes for 220 yards including scoring tosses to Devin Logan (2) and Luke Friesen.

The game had a festive atmosphere, as about 800 fans showed up to cheer on the Hawks in CTV B.C.’s High School Heroes game of the week.

“We promoted our sport and our school very nicely,” said Kelly, whose No. 1-ranked AAA squad improved to 4-0 on the season.
