KINGSTON, Ont. — The Queen’s Golden Gaels scored 33 unanswered points Sunday and won for the first time this Canadian Interuniversity Sport football season.
The defending Vanier Cup champions evened their record at 1-1 with a 40-7 win over the Windsor Lancers at Richardson Stadium.
Queen’s quarterback [former Mouat Hawk] Justin Chapdelaine completed 16 of 28 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown and an interception. He also led the team in rushing, gaining 74 yards on the ground on 10 carries and one touchdown.
Jimmy Therrien opened the scoring for Queen’s on an 11-yard first-quarter touchdown run.
The Lancers (1-2) levelled the score early in the second quarter when quarterback Austin Kennedy found Nick Baldassi for a 25-yard touchdown pass.
The floodgates opened for the Gaels after that, as the home side put up 20 second-quarter points on the strength of a Ryan Granberg touchdown run, a Chapdelaine TD pass to Christopher Ioannides, a Dan Village [former Mouat Hawk] field goal, a safety and a single.
Chapdelaine rushed for his touchdown in the third quarter. Village connected on two second-half field goals.
Queen’s controlled the game, amassing 26 first downs and 389 yards on offence. The Lancers, meanwhile, got only 10 first downs and 164 offensive yards.
The Gaels defence held the Lancers to just seven yards on the ground.
The Gaels visit Guelph (2-0) next week, while Windsor hosts Western (2-1).
